WSU Notes

Rahe pleased to have multiple go-to scorers on his roster

Junior transfer forward Davion Berry led Weber State in scoring in his first three games as a Wildcat; junior center Kyle Tresnak has led the ’Cats for the last three games.

In the post-Damian Lillard era, WSU coach Randy Rahe is more than happy to see different guys step up as Weber State’s top scoring threat.

Rahe hopes Wildcats can build on signature road win

The Wildcats had the right stuff in the Wright brothers’ hometown of Dayton, Ohio.

Now Weber State coach Randy Rahe hopes a road win over the Dayton Flyers last Friday provides the Wildcats some liftoff as they prepare for the rest of the season.

Coaching carousel, Lillard highlight wild year for WSU

It’s been a wild, wild year in Wildcat Nation.

Who would have predicted last December after John L. Smith’s introductory press conference to become the coach at his alma mater Weber State that Smith would be out of a job right now — as the interim head coach at Arkansas — while the majority of the staff he hired in Ogden remains in place?

Sears now plays waiting game regarding future at WSU

Since being named Weber State’s interim football coach in April, Jody Sears has continuously taught his players to focus on the process, not the outcome.

The process — the season — is over. Now Sears and his staff await the outcome: A decision from WSU athletics director Jerry Bovee and school administrators about whether Sears will be given a contract to continue to coach the Wildcats.

Just like the players, WSU assistant Berard making adjustments

The first-year Wildcats weren’t the only newcomers contributing to Weber State’s season-opening victory over Arizona Christian in men’s basketball last Saturday.

Assistant coach Keith Berard was on the Wildcats’ bench for his first official game since joining WSU coach Randy Rahe’s staff in June.

Lillard has quickly erased any doubts about his abilities

In his first game as a freshman at Weber State in 2008, Damian Lillard came off the bench and scored five points in the Wildcats’ 70-66 loss to Miami (Ohio).

The next night, in the second game of the 2K Sports Classic tournament at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion, Lillard contributed eight points and three assists in a Weber State victory over Prairie View A&M.

In Game 3 of the 2008 season, the Oakland, Calif., native went 1 for 9 from the field and scored seven points for the Wildcats as Long Beach State rallied from a 23-point second-half deficit to beat Weber State in overtime.

Lillard transitioning from Weber State to a whole new universe in NBA

Geographically, Damian Lillard was just 40 miles from where he played college basketball at Weber State.

Professionally, the Portland Trail Blazers’ rookie point guard was in a completely different universe when he played his first NBA preseason game in Salt Lake City against the Utah Jazz last Thursday.

Two-point call was as easy as cake for birthday boy Sears

Sunday was Jody Sears’ birthday, but his party was Saturday.

After Weber State football players enjoyed their long-awaited first victory of the season, a 24-22 nailbiter over in-state rival and new Big Sky Conference foe Southern Utah, they finished a rowdy postgame celebration in the locker room by singing “Happy Birthday” to Sears.

“That was probably all he wanted for his birthday, right there,” Wildcat quarterback Mike Hoke said.

Sears, Weber State’s interim head coach, said he didn’t care about getting an early birthday present.

Weber State’s loss to Sac State was a true matter of inches

A perfect punt, a punt that never happened and a penalty combined to keep Weber State on the losing side of the ledger Saturday against Sacramento State.

A few inches either way may have been the difference between the Wildcats finally earning their first win of the season and the Hornets getting off to their best start since 1991 with a 19-14 victory.

In the third quarter of a game tied at 7-7, Sac State punter Mason Magleby perfectly executed a roll-out rugby-style punt that rolled 52 yards before it was downed practically on Weber State’s own goal line, a few inches short of being a touchback.

Two-bit finish cost Weber State against No. 20 Cal Poly

It takes four quarters to make a buck — and four quarters to win a football game.

Weber State made change in the first half Saturday against Cal Poly but still came up a dollar short against the undefeated Mustangs.

The winless Wildcats (0-6, 0-3 Big Sky) played easily their best first half of the season but couldn’t close the deal against No. 20 Cal Poly (5-0, 3-0), which will likely move up again in the FCS Top 25 poll this week.

WSU Notes: Wildcats doom themselves with slow starts

The Wildcats never gave themselves a chance.

Saturday’s 37-13 loss to UC Davis was the latest in a series of misfires for winless Weber State.

The stats tell the story of the Wildcats’ 0-5 start:

WSU's first half woes continue, but Sears happy with team's moxy

If the end of Weber State’s Homecoming loss to Eastern Washington last Saturday was shocking similar to last season’s contest with the Eagles, the beginning was disturbingly familiar to the Wildcats as well.

Despite moving the ball more effectively, Weber State still found itself on the wrong side of a lopsided halftime score.

Texas pipeline continues to produce for WSU basketball team

Weber State has a verbal commitment from its second three-star basketball recruit in the past couple of weeks.

Jeremy Senglin, a 6-foot-1 guard from Arlington Bowie High School in Dallas, called WSU coach Randy Rahe’s staff over the weekend to make his commitment, a source familiar with Senglin’s recruitment confirmed.

Sears gives Wildcats high marks for scrap with Cougars

Weber State coach Jody Sears wanted to use Saturday’s game against a heavily favored in-state opponent as a gauge to measure the Wildcats’ toughness.

WSU (0-2) lost to BYU, 45-13, to drop a second straight game against a Football Bowl Subdivision program to open the season.

So, where are the Wildcats on that toughness gauge?

Bulldogs ran away early, but Hoke put on display with arm, feet

Jody Sears made his head coaching debut for Weber State, but the Wildcats were also debuting a brand new quarterback.

Same name as last year’s starter, different arm.

Senior Mike Hoke looked like a new man in Weber State’s 37-10 loss to Fresno State late Saturday night at Bulldog Stadium in Fresno, Calif. More accurately, he looked like the old Mike Hoke, the one who threw for over 300 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 82 yards in Weber State’s season opener a year ago.
