Damian Lillard a unanimous NBA all-rookie team honoree

 

The Portland Trail Blazers’ Damian Lillard, the unanimous selection for the 2012-13 NBA Rookie of the Year, headlines the 2012-13 NBA All-Rookie First Team, the NBA announced Tuesday.

Lillard, the standout out of Weber State University, was the lone unanimous first team selection (58 points, 29 First Team votes), while the Washington Wizards’ Bradley Beal and the New Orleans Hornets’ Anthony Davis totaled 57 points each, including 28 first team votes. Rounding out the first team are Dion Waiters of the Cleveland Cavaliers (50 points, 21 first team) and Harrison Barnes of the Golden State Warriors (47 points, 18 first team).

PORTLAND, Ore. — After a strong first day the Weber State men’s track and field team sits in first place at the 2013 Big Sky Outdoor Championships.

The Wildcat women’s team is in the mix at the meet held in Portland, Ore. WSU sits sixth overall.

WSU softball coach Tina Johnson steps down after four seasons

OGDEN -- After four seasons and helping restart the program, Tina Johnson has announced she is stepping down as head coach of the Weber State softball team. Johnson’s resignation is effective immediately. 

“Deciding to leave is a very difficult decision to make, but with recent family events, I feel the timing is now,” Johnson said. “I want to thank the administration at Weber State for giving me the opportunity to restart, build and coach the softball program. It’s been a great experience and starting this program from scratch was one of the biggest challenges of my coaching career. I’ve loved working here and coaching the student-athletes. I believe there are great things in place for the Weber State softball program and players.

Damian Lillard’s coronation as NBA rookie of the year has seemed inevitable for the past few months, but it was far from inevitable when he left Weber State to enter the draft last season.

Weber State to wrap up softball season on the road

After having 10 days off during finals week, the Weber State University softball team returns to action this week for its final games of the 2013 season.

The Wildcats will face five games against two opponents during the week, beginning with a non-conference doubleheader against in-state rival Utah Valley Tuesday at Wolverine Field.

CHANDLER, Ariz. — The Weber State women’s golf team wrapped up the 2013 Big Sky Conference golf championships on Tuesday at the Ocotillo Golf Resort, finishing seventh with a three-round total of 915.

Weber County Commission honors Weber State basketball squad

OGDEN -- After completing an historic seaso,n the Weber State men’s basketball team has been honored by the Weber County Commission. 

Weber County Commissioners Kerry Gibson, Jan Zogmaister and Matthew Bell read a proclamation Tuesday at the weekly commission meeting honoring the team for its success this season. WSU coach Randy Rahe along with several Wildcat coaches and players accepted the proclamation at the meeting.

Purple and White game caps busy sports day on Weber State campus

 

OGDEN -- The Weber State football team will conclude spring practice with the annual Purple and White Spring game this Saturday at Stewart Stadium. The spring game will be an approximately 45-play scrimmage and will begin at 6 p.m.

The White team will be on offense with the Purple team on defense.  

Weber State celebrating banner year in men’s basketball

Purple Power is on the rise at Weber State’s Purple Palace.

With the added boost of four extra postseason home contests during the CollegeInsider.com Tournament, more people watched the Wildcats men’s basketball team from the purple seats in the Dee Events Center this year than in nearly three decades.

A total of 125,414 fans filed into the Purple Palace this season, including 10,583 who came to see the Wildcats face East Carolina in the CIT championship game on April 2, marking the highest total attendance at WSU since 130,821 came to watch the Wildcats during the 1983-84 campaign.

While the 2012-13 total was juiced up by the addition of four CIT games (19 is the most home games in school history), the number of fans per game at Weber State has risen in each of the past five seasons.

Ex-Wildcat Lillard wins another NBA rookie of the month award

NEW YORK – The Toronto Raptors’ Jonas Valanciunas and the Portland Trail Blazers’ Damian Lillard today were named the Kia NBA Eastern and Western Conference Rookies of the Month, respectively, for games played in March.

Lillard, winner of his fifth consecutive Kia Rookie of the Month award, led all rookies in scoring (21.3 ppg), assists (6.8 apg), field goals (119), 3-pointers (42) and free throws (61). In March, he became one of only four rookies in league history to record 1,390 points and 475 assists.

Weber State prepares for Saturday morning scrimmage

OGDEN -- The Weber State football team will hold its final scrimmage of the spring season before next week’s Purple and White Game. The Wildcats will scrimmage Saturday morning at Stewart Stadium. 

The team will begin practice at 9 a.m. and will start the 45-play scrimmage at approximately 9:45 a.m.

All scrimmages and practices are free and open to the public.
