OGDEN — The only lingering effects from the Wildcats’ heartbreaking loss to Montana in the Big Sky Conference tournament championship game appeared to be a desire to bounce back and put the past behind them.

Dodge ball: Weber State rallies to defeat North Dakota in Big Sky semifinals

MISSOULA, Mont. — Weber State came into Dahlberg Arena before its Big Sky Conference semifinal game with North Dakota wearing purple warm-up shirts with “Rise To The Occasion” printed on the front.

The Wildcats took the slogan literally.

With WSU trailing by 12 points early in the second half to a UND team that was outshooting the best shooters in the country, freshman forward Joel Bolomboy rose up for three straight soaring slam dunks that lifted WSU back into a game it eventually won 76-74.

Davion Berry rose to the occasion to tie his career-high with 25 points as Weber State survived the semifinal slugfest against North Dakota to win its 13th straight game and advance to the Big Sky Tournament championship game.

MISSOULA, Mont. — On the first day of the Big Sky Conference Tournament, Weber State senior shooting guard Scott Bamforth’s 1-year-old son was chosen from the crowd to play a halftime contest involving giant inflatable dice.

Little Kingzton rolled a one on his second try when he needed at least a two to win.

It was the only unlucky break for the Wildcats on Thursday.

Creditors claim bankrupt John L. Smith dumped $2M

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Creditors are trying to block former Arkansas coach John L. Smith from liquidating $40.7 million in debt, saying he moved several properties and more than $2 million from his holdings prior to filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection.

Federal bankruptcy court filings by Smith’s creditors say he cashed $1 million in certificates of deposit in 2008 and he is “unable to explain the current location of the funds.” The documents also allege that in 2008 and 2009, Smith transferred $1.16 million to his wife, son and daughter-in-law. Most of that sum, $975,000, went to the Diana Smith Trust, which is named for Smith’s wife.
