Hostage situation at Super 8; part of Wyoming Boulevard closed

An armed hostage situation is “tense” and two hostages have been released at a Casper motel, said Casper Police Chief Chris Walsh. Police believe there may be other hostages.

No injuries have been reported as a result of the standoff.

Police were called to the Super 8 Motel, 3838 CY Ave., earlier this morning because a number of people were going in and out of a specific room, a motel manager told the Star-Tribune.

BUFORD, Wyo. -- What's advertised as the smallest town in the United States is scheduled to go up for auction next month.

Concussion bill for non-school sports in Wyoming

CHEYENNE, Wyo. -- A Senate committee has endorsed proposed legislation that would require coaches and trainers of organized non-school youth sports and activities to get training about concussions and how to handle head injuries.

Senate File 50 advances to the Senate floor after winning the 5-0 vote from the Senate Labor, Health and Social Services Committee on Monday.

Pronghorn antelope numbers healthy in Wyoming

GILLETTE, Wyo. -- The pronghorn buck looked across a quarter-mile of grass and sagebrush and seemed to smile.

There was ample reason.

Michael King and I crouch-walked in the animal's direction, binoculars held atop our heads like 6-inch horns, and did our best pronghorn antelope impersonations.

There are easier ruses to pull off. Some shag carpets offer more cover than well-browsed western grassland. And pronghorn have excellent vision.

Blast at Wyo. oil production site kills 3 workers

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — All three workers killed in an oilfield explosion in eastern Wyoming were men, and all three died at the scene of the latest deadly workplace mishap in the state, authorities said Tuesday.

The blast occurred Monday at an oil production site on a private ranch, about 50 miles northeast of Casper.

CHEYENNE, Wyo. -- Four members of a Colorado Springs family died after their vehicle drove into a washed-out section of a mountain highway in Wyoming and was swept downstream by a raging creek as they fled torrential rains at a national forest campground.

Wyo. man fatally shoots his 3 kids, brother

WHEATLAND, Wyo. -- Police say a man shot and killed his three sons and his adult brother and wounded his wife in a mobile home park in southeast Wyoming.

All the victims were shot Thursday, Wheatland Police Chief Randy Chesser said.

Everett Conant, who is in his mid-30s, was arrested after a brief standoff that followed the shootings, Chesser said. The shootings were reported to police just before 6 p.m. Thursday.

Wyo. sheriff pays family for cards, security in Utah

ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. -- A southwestern Wyoming sheriff is raising eyebrows for using public money to pay a company owned by his son and daughter-in-law more than $50,000 for handmade greeting cards and security services.

The ghost town of Piedmont in Uinta County, Wyo., southeast of Evanston, began as a small railroad and timber town but started to decline when Union Pacific opened a new line that bypassed the town. Mormon pioneers Moses Byrne and Charles Guild helped settle the the town in 1867, Byrne building several charcoal kilns and Guild starting a ranch. Wendy Peterson is a descendant of Marie Cardon Guild, wife of Charles Guild, who spent time in Ogden. Her family owns the land and ghost town and still lives in the area. Once a hot spot: Charcoal kilns fueled Wyoming ghost town

Piedmont is a ghost town. The few remaining buildings, with empty windows and collapsing roofs, are surrounded by sagebrush. The town’s settlers are buried in small graveyards on the hills.
