Comedy fundraiser to benefit YMCA

OGDEN — The YMCA is hosting a comedy night fundraiser to raise money for its new facility in Ogden. Stand Up For Youth will be held for those ages 16 and older from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Wiseguys Comedy Club, 269 Historic 25th St.

Nakashima edges Valentine! Incumbent holds onto after-school office

OGDEN — President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney weren’t the only people looking for votes Tuesday.

T.O. Smith YMCA students Sasha Nakashima and Toby Valentine were doing the same thing. The school’s YMCA after-school program conducted its own election to help students have a better grasp on the national election.

T.O. Smith YMCA site coordinator Kara Honaker got the idea while unloading new chairs and noticing that the cardboard boxes resembled voting booths.

Donation will help YMCA build community center in Ogden

OGDEN — The YMCA is well on its way to building its first family community center in Ogden thanks to a donation of $200,000 from the Larry H. Miller Group of Companies.

Director of youth and family for Northern Utah YMCA retires

OGDEN — While teaching at a local elementary school, Marsha Garfield Prantil noticed many of the students lingered behind after school because they had nothing to do until their parents got home from work.

Ogden's community school offerings get ramped up

OGDEN — The first term of Mount Ogden Junior High’s community school was a huge success, so organizers are expanding offerings for the term that begins Tuesday.

“It’s what I was hoping for,” said Debbie Daniel, YMCA Community School coordinator.

The Computers 101 class drew the biggest crowd, with students ranging from age 41 to 86, she said. Daniel is adding a second session.

Elementary students send cards to wounded officers

OGDEN -- Christy Vu wants to thank the police officers in Ogden for protecting her and risking their lives every day to do so.

The 9-year-old Lincoln Elementary School student said she felt very sad when Ogden Police Officer Jared Francom was killed and five other officers were wounded early in January.

Christy, along with several of her classmates who are part of the YMCA after-school program, recently made get-well cards for Ogden Police Officers Shawn Grogan, Kasey Burrell and Michael Rounkles, Weber County Sheriff's Sgt. Nate Hutchinson and Roy Police Officer Jason Vanderwarf.

Reality Town teaches young people financial responsibilities

OGDEN -- At age 15, Shawn Felter was a little unsettled to find himself the married father of two, employed as a shipping clerk for $2,122 a month, paying $779 of that for housing and for utilities, with most of the balance going to food, child care, transportation and insurance.

YMCA given OK for new building

OGDEN -- The Ogden School Board has said yes to an offer from YMCA in Utah to construct a new building for after-school programs and community classes in exchange for use of land.

YMCA celebrates after-school programs

OGDEN — After-school programs designed to keep kids safe and help them academically will be the focus of a celebration Wednesday.

Mayor Matthew Godfrey will kick off festivities with a proclamation in support of after-school programs at a rally at 3 p.m. at the Municipal Building, 2549 Washington Blvd.

Activities continue with a large family fun night running from 4 to 8 p.m. at Fat Cats Family Fun Center at 23rd Street and Washington Boulevard.

YMCA keeps children busy after school

OGDEN — Gone are the days when school children would board a bus headed to the YMCA. Now, the YMCA comes right to the child with 14 after-school programs at schools throughout Weber and Ogden school districts.

Jennifer Mortensen, site manager for the YMCA After School Program at James Madison Elementary, said it is a great way for students to have supervised, structured time as well as some great play time.

OGDEN -- When ideas about building a new Ogden elementary school were being tossed about, the thought of having an environmentally friendly facility caught everyone's attention.

YMCA offers free summer program

The YMCA is offering a free summer program for youths age 11-15. Activities will include swimming, cooking, hiking, art, nature, dance and other fun activities. To register call 801-839-3385

Programs will be held 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday-Thursday until July 12 at Mound Fort Junior High, 1396 Liberty Ave.
