CHICAGO -- Ingrid Yang turned to yoga a dozen years ago as a way to deal with injuries she suffered as a distance runner.

"When I started stretching and doing some strength training -- not with weights, but with my own body weight -- I noticed I was becoming injured less and less," Yang says of her introduction to yoga.

Soon after, she started teaching yoga, eventually owning her own studio and teaching classes on both coasts. Yang has also, with co-author Daniel Dituro, recently released the book "Hatha Yoga Asanas."

Ogden's community school offerings get ramped up

OGDEN — The first term of Mount Ogden Junior High’s community school was a huge success, so organizers are expanding offerings for the term that begins Tuesday.

“It’s what I was hoping for,” said Debbie Daniel, YMCA Community School coordinator.

The Computers 101 class drew the biggest crowd, with students ranging from age 41 to 86, she said. Daniel is adding a second session.

Yoga poses as Olympic sport: Is that a stretch?

NEW YORK -- The judges will be watching -- were the competitor's knees locked? Were the wrists straight? Did the forehead and the knee connect? If not, points are going to be lost.

Considering yoga? Listen to your body to prevent injuries

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- Mark Goldman was a relative newcomer to yoga when he found himself teetering in standing lotus pose with an instructor barking over him like a drill sergeant.

"You can get into this pose," the yogi said. "Push harder."

Goldman, a "typical Silicon Valley" go-getter who works in high tech sales, took the bait. The harder the better, he thought. He deepened his squat, forcing his knee down. Then -- snap.

He'd torn his meniscus, the tissue that aids motion in the knee. Surgery would repair it. However, it would take Goldman, a longtime runner with a stiff body, years to develop a mindful yoga practice more in line with what Indians intended when they developed the lifestyle 5,000 years ago.

Yoga 'puts you in a good place'

Everybody's doing it.

Celebrities, seniors, young adults, teens and young children. Even cats and dogs.

People of every race and religious group are catching on to the benefits of yoga.

The 5,000-year-old practice has gone from an obscure Eastern-oriented discipline to somehow, almost overnight, the hottest exercise trend.
