A plea from someone who needs help: 'I'm still me'

Sarah is a nice, quiet middle-aged woman, smiling and friendly, but when I asked her how old her children are, she paused. Her eyes looked to the side. She closed her mouth and wrinkled her brow.

"Some days I just can't remember," she said finally. "I have a degree from Weber State University, but I can't remember what I studied."

Summit: Weber agencies' problems growing along with clients' woes

OGDEN -- Federal money to help the Top of Utah's poor is drying up as the number of people looking for help is rising, putting agencies that work with the poor in a financial bind.

YCC sets annual Footsteps to Light event

OGDEN — Since the year 2000, domestic violence related homicides accounted for 40 percent of all adult homicides in Utah.

That statistic, followed by many more, was released by The Utah Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice earlier this year.

To remember the victims of domestic violence, Your Community Connection is holding its 14th annual Footsteps to Light event on Oct. 6. The event will begin at 5 p.m. at Lester Park on 24th Street. Participants can make banners and will receive a T-shirt prior to walking down 24th Street to Washington Boulevard and then to the Ogden Amphitheater.

YCC seeks long-term volunteers

OGDEN -- Your Community Connection is looking for volunteers to help at the front desk and the domestic violence victim assistance center.

Julie Hurd, special events coordinator for YCC, said there is a need simply because the organization lacks money to hire people to do the jobs that need to be done to continue offering its services.

"On average, we help about 300 people a day, and without our volunteers, our staff would be unable to maintain the sheer volume of individuals we help," Hurd said. "Currently, we do not have as many volunteers as we need, so staff are doing things outside of their jobs to cover all areas of service."

This year, the tournament will be held Aug. 14 to 16 at the Zermatt Resort located in Midway. For more information, contact Raquel Lee, YCC assistant director, at 801-689-1702.

Five Top of Utah residents honored with YCC awards

OGDEN — Five area residents were honored last month by Your Community Connection at the 28th annual Mattie Wattis Harris Awards.

They were Heidi Christensen, William “Bill” Gibson, Nancy Nightingale, Nicholas Poorte and Marsha Prantil.

The newly named “Making the World a Better Place” awards were limited to a handful of residents as opposed to a much larger pool of winners in the “Spirit of American Woman” awards in the past. The change was an effort to make the recognitions more meaningful, organizers said.
