Research team studys Zion National Park frogs

ST. GEORGE -- A research team from southern Utah's Dixie State College is studying the relationship between a fungus and frogs in Zion National Park.

ZION NATIONAL PARK -- Zion National Park has launched a weekly, drop-in volunteer program to allow the public to help improve the park.

Officials say the new Friday-only program is open to both visitors and residents of park-area communities from June to November.

Volunteers should meet at the Zion Canyon Visitor Center shuttle stop at 9 a.m., and expect to work about three hours.

Searchers locate 2 hikers at Zion National Park

SPRINGDALE -- A park official says search crews have located a pair of overdue hikers in Zion National Park.

Park spokesman David Eaker says 22-year-old Nate Simon and 35-year-old Matthew Files were found about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday while walking out of the Subway slot canyon.

Roy woman, Oregon man may have been found with others in Zion

SPRINGDALE -- Zion National Park Rangers are "fairly confident" they have found a Utah woman and an Oregon man who have been missing since Sunday.

About 25 park rangers, employees and volunteers were searching for Evgenia Buzulukova, 25, from Roy, and Jonathon Wilson, 28, from Portland, Ore. The search expanded to David Balkcom, 37, of Salt Lake City, after he was overdue to return after entering The Subway canyon on Monday.

SALT LAKE CITY -- Receding flood waters in Southern Utah on Wednesday left emergency officials with fewer problems than originally feared.

Zion National Park will reopen Thursday

SPRINGDALE -- Administrators say Zion National Park is set to partially reopen unless flooding on the Virgin Rivers gets worse.

Park officials said in a news release Wednesday that the Zion Lodge and Watchman Campground will also reopen Thursday. The south entrance and the visitor center opened Wednesday afternoon.

State Route 9 will remain closed from the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive to the east entrance. The highway closed Monday after a 300-foot section was washed out by heavy rain.

SALT LAKE CITY -- A dam on the Virgin River in Southern Utah that was feared to be close to breaking has been declared safe.

SPRINGDALE -- Authorities have closed Zion National Park in southern Utah because of rising river levels and the risk of flooding.

Park officials said in a news release that they evacuated an unspecified number of people Tuesday. Those included guests staying at the Zion Lodge and campers in the park.

Avalanche, flooding risk rises from constant heavy rain

OGDEN -- An "atmospheric river" has been flowing over Top of Utah since Saturday morning, which explains the constant heavy rain.

SPRINGDALE -- Heavy rains washed out a section of state Route 9 in Zion National Park and swollen rivers were threatening towns in southern Utah on Monday.

The National Park Service said in a news release that an area about 300 feet long around and under the road had eroded and was unsafe for travel. The damaged section is about two miles west of Zion's east entrance.

Park officials closed about six miles of Route 9, commonly called the Zion-Mount Carmel Highway, from the east entrance to the junction with the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive.
