Officials: Flier in Layton doesn't violate state election code but may cross criminal line

LAYTON — The Utah Lieutenant Governor’s Office has determined a flier delivered last weekend to Layton homes by Citizens for Responsible Growth, a group opposing two land propositions on today’s ballot, does not violate the state election code.

The group responsible for the flier violated no election code laws, Mark Thomas, state director of elections, said Monday, even though it is “unfortunate” the group did not list its name on the flier.

But Layton city officials could be looking at the legality of the flier as it relates to the state’s criminal code.

LAYTON — A citizens group, Residents for West Layton Village, is working to educate voters about a city-supported “village concept” in hopes it will be approved.

The group of about 100 members is in opposition to residents who raised objections at public hearings to a proposed 107-acre multi-use project consisting of single-family and multifamily dwellings, shopping and open space. The project is proposed for a site between 2200 West to 2700 West on West Hill Field Road.

Layton voters will have their say on the development via two related propositions on the Nov. 6 general election ballot.

Syracuse creates new zoning classification

Members of the city council voted to create a neighborhood services zoning designation. The request was driven by Russell Rentmeister of Rentmeister & Co. Inc.

The zoning designation is expected to create a zone that would be either isolated or transitional in nature, which would permit a mix of small-scale uses, including commercial, professional office and local services.

Bountiful resident decries 'trivial rules' and 'severe consequences' for chickens

BOUNTIFUL — A local resident suggests there is something foul about the way rules involving chickens are being drawn up.

“There are some very trivial rules with very severe consequences. If my chicken wanders in the front yard or a child leaves the front gate open, that’s equivalent to an assault on another person. I don’t think so,” Michael Peay told members of the city council on Tuesday during a public hearing on possible amendments to Title 14 of the city’s land use ordinance.

Peay is fuming about potential chicken guidelines that are part of a zoning amendment currently being considered by the planning commission.
