Steve was born in Minneapolis, MN, on September 18, 1938, to Ralph and Helen Farrar. He was raised in Salt Lake City.

Steve married Myrna Talbot on February 11, 1961, they have lived in Roy, UT, for 45 years. They are the parents of three children: Scott, Wendy (Rick), and Melanie (Scott). They have six grandsons, one granddaughter, five great-grandsons, and one more great-grandson on the way. They also had a granddaughter who died in infancy.
