Bernie Dean Yoachum

Apr 20, 2019

March 26, 1938 ~ April 17, 2019

Bernie Dean Yoachum, age 81, passed away peacefully on April 17, 2019, at his home in South Ogden Utah, surrounded by loved ones, following courageous battles with cancer and open-heart surgery. He endured faithfully until the end.

Bernie was born on March 26, 1938, to Bernard and Alpha Yoachum, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He graduated from Edmonds High School in Edmonds, Washington where he excelled in various sports, including being an all-state baseball player. Following high school, Bernie received his Bachelor and Masters degrees from the University of Utah (Go Utes!) in Education.

Bernie married the love of his life, Mary Ellen Brown, in 1972, and was sealed to her for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple in 1976. They were married for almost 50 years. Together, they made their home in the wonderful neighborhood of Shadow Valley in Ogden, Utah, where they raised three sons.

For more than 30 years Bernie taught math and physical education to thousands of students at North Davis and Sunset Junior High Schools and influenced too many lives to count. While at Sunset, Bernie created the school’s first intramural program and was head football coach, where his teams dominated every school in Davis County for multiple years. A few of his players went on to play in the National Football League.

Bernie was a popular referee throughout the state of Utah amongst high school and college athletes and coaches. He officiated more state championships than any other referee in Utah sports history and was inducted into the Utah Sports Hall of Fame in 1999.

During summers in between school years, Bernie worked for the U.S. Forest Service building roads and campgrounds. There wasn’t a square inch of Utah forests that he didn’t know. He loved being outdoors, fishing, and working in his immaculate yard.

Bernie’s greatest love in life was his wife and three boys. He spent every second of his free time coaching their youth soccer, basketball, baseball, and football teams. Almost all of which went undefeated.

Bernie was preceded in death by his parents, his son Kevin Yoachum, and his daughter Stephanie Yoachum. He is survived by his wife, Mary; three adult children: Paul (Aubrey) Yoachum, Brian (Melisa) Yoachum, Robbie (Holly) Yoachum, and nine grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 23, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. at the Washington Terrace 13th Ward Chapel, 4855 South 300 West, Washington Terrace, Utah.

Friends may visit with family on Monday, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. and Tuesday, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church. Interment, Lindquist’s Memorial Gardens of the Wasatch, 1718 Combe Rd., South Ogden.
