June 24, 1921 ~ May 15, 2019
Our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother Gwendolyn (Gwen) Stokes Garlick, passed away May 15, 2019, at the age of 97. She was born on June 24, 1921, in Chicago, IL; to Mabel and John Babcock. She was raised in Kanesville, Utah. She loved growing up on the farm with her beloved mother and stepfather, Edward S. Green.
She married her husband of 63 years, Carl Dean Stokes Sr. at the age of 16 on December 14, 1937, in The Salt Lake LDS Temple. Shortly after their marriage Carl left to serve in World War II in the Asiatic Pacific. Together, they had four children: Annette (Roger) Arnold, Dean (Cathy) Stokes, Larry (Cindy) Stokes and Vern (Vicki) Stokes.
She was a homemaker and focused on raising her children before she entered the workforce as an occupational therapist at Weber Memorial Hospital. She was involved in the community and was a natural leader. She was president of the Hooper Women's Club and Charea Club of Ogden. She was also president of the PTA and held many leadership positions in the LDS church. She enjoyed organizing large dances for her ward and stake.
Gwen will be remembered for her Christmas Eve parties where we shared stories, sang carols, opened gifts and feasted on delicious food. Gwen loved to stay active throughout her life, she walked and hiked often in Southern Utah, where she and Carl built a home in Virgin, UT. Together, they quarried every rock by hand for the outside of their home and surrounding gardens. Carl and Gwen spent their retirement traveling throughout the world, dancing together and hosting parties for friends and family. In 1999, they sold their home in Virgin and made their winter home at Sun River Golf Community in St. George.
She had a love of gardening and grew beautiful flower gardens wherever she lived. She enjoyed fishing throughout the United States. She was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Gwen took a genuine interest in each of her children and grandchildren. She was supportive of them and attended performances and sports. She was interested in their hobbies and wanted to know about their lives. She was a gentle and caring mother, grandmother and friend.
Gwen married Geoff Garlick at the age of 82, and they spent seven happy years together before his death in 2010.
