OK, there’s, like, a million of them, so it’s kinda hard to narrow it down. But here are our Top 5 favorite moments from “Napoleon Dynamite” …
Every time Napoleon gets near a tetherball — whether it’s utilizing his sweet ninja-kick moves when he plays by himself, or the literally sweet ending to the movie where he asks Deb if she wants to play tetherball after telling her: “I caught you a delicious bass.”
2. Rex Kwon Do
Actor Diedrich Bader kills it as the American-flag-sweat-pants-wearing martial arts instructor. Best line: “Do you think I got where I am today because I dress like Peter Pan here? Take a look at what I’m wearing, people. Do you think anybody wants a roundhouse kick to the face while I’m wearing these bad boys?”
3. All about the tots
Napoleon scores Pedro’s tater tots in the cafeteria. He promptly stuffs them in the zippered cargo pocket in his pants, where they later get turned into mashed potatoes when Napoleon refuses to share them with a classmate.
4. Uncle Rico's football dreams
One classic scene is Uncle Rico obsessing about his high school football days. After hitting a bike-riding Napoleon square in the face with a flying steak, Uncle Rico launches into a wistful what-if monologue: “How much you wanna make a bet I can throw a football over them mountains? Coach would’ve put me in fourth quarter, we’d have been state champions, no doubt. No doubt in my mind.”
And watch actor Jon Gries' facial expressions throughout the scene. They're priceless.
5. The Dance
Napoleon dancing his heart out at the school assembly is unforgettable. Of that hilarious scene, actor Jon Heder told the Standard-Examiner: “That was just all freestyle. They said, ‘You like to dance, just do your own thing.’ I remember thinking I should choreograph something, but we weren’t that kind of movie. So I said, ‘Just play some cool music and I’ll wing it.’”
As he recalls, Heder said they did it in three takes.
“I’d dance for awhile, then almost puke my guts out, go get a drink of water and do it again,” he said.
