Continuing Films

THE 5TH WAVE — ★★1/2 (PG-13) Although you’ve seen a lot of it before in other YA film adaptations, “The 5th Wave” at least does it better. But there’s still room for improvement. 112 minutes. Layton Tinseltown, Newgate Tinseltown.

13 HOURS: THE SECRET SOLDIERS OF BENGHAZI — ★★★ (R) Based on a book about the events at Benghazi, the film adaptation includes all of the goriest details of the attack up close, as well as the bits that have come under such scrutiny since then. The film tells a good story, but the narrative may seem a bit cloudy. Strong combat violence throughout, bloody images and language. 144 minutes. Cinemark Farmington, Megaplex 13.

ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: THE ROAD CHIP — (PG). Alvin, Simon and Theodore take their adventures on the road. 86 minutes. Not reviewed by the Standard-Examiner. Cinepointe 6, MovieGrille.

THE CHOICE — ★1/2 (PG-13) The film is as predictable as Nicholas Sparks’ novels. The latest film adaptation is its own spoiler. Rated PG-13 for sexual content and some thematic issues. 111 minutes. AMC Layton, Syracuse 6, Megaplex 13, Cinemark Farmington, Megaplex 14, Walker 8, North Ogden 6.

CONCUSSION — ★★★ (PG-13) Thematic material including some disturbing images and language. Will Smith gives an Oscar-worthy performance as forensic neuropathologist Dr. Bennet Omalu. 123 minutes. CinePointe 6.

CREED — ★★★ (PG-13) Nostalgia runs deep in this, the 7th installment of the “Rocky” franchise. And if you’re a fan, then this flick is for you. 133 minutes. Cinepointe 6, Kaysville, Moviegrille.

DEADPOOL — ★★★1/2(R) Fox finally does it right. Minor quibbles don’t hold down this very R-rated superhero love story starring Ryan Reynolds in a part he was born to play. 108 minutes. AMC Layton, Syracuse 6, Megaplex 13, Cinemark Farmington, Layton Tinseltown, Newgate Tinseltown, Megaplex 14, Walker 8, North Ogden 6.

DIRTY GRANDPA — Rated R for crude sexual content throughout, graphic nudity, and for language and drug use. Not reviewed by the Standard-Examiner. 102 minutes. Cinepointe 6.

THE FINEST HOURS — ★★★(PG-13) Disney gives us a family-friendly and exciting depiction of that fateful day in February of 1952 when four members of the Coast Guard set out to rescue the more than 30 sailors stranded on board a damaged ship caught in a horrendous storm. 117 minutes. Megaplex 13, Cinemark Farmington, Layton Tinseltown, Megaplex 14, Walker 8.

THE FOREST — ★★1/2 (PG-13) This promising premise based on real-world eeriness with a talented lead deserved a better script and a more satisfying ending. 95 minutes. Centerpointe 6.

THE GOOD DINOSAUR — (PG) For peril, action and thematic elements. 100 minutes. Not reviewed by the Standard-Examiner. Cinepointe 6, MovieGrille, Kaysville.

HAIL, CAESAR — ★★1/2 (PG-13) May be one of the more “shrug-worthy” for the Coen brothers, but there are laughs and witty moments. Some suggestive content and smoking. 106 minutes. AMC Layton, Cinemark Farmington, Megaplex 14, Walker 8.

HOW TO BE SINGLE — ★★1/2 (R) An updated interpretation of modern relationships whose reach exceeds its grasp. It tries to not fall prey to cliché but ultimately doesn’t stick its landing. 110 minutes. AMC Layton, Megaplex 13, Cinemark Farmington, Newgate Tinseltown, Megaplex 14, Walker 8, North Ogden 6.

THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY PART 2 — ★★1/2 (PG-13) Yet another tween franchise finally finishes stretching its source material out an extra movie for no great reason. A finale for the least critical of fans. 137 minutes. Centerpointe 6, Kaysville, MovieGrille.

IN THE HEART OF THE SEA — ★★1/2 (PG-13) Dependable filmmaking from director Ron Howard, with some surprises for those familiar with “Moby Dick”; but it also lags in the middle and its ending doesn’t quite satisfy. 121 minutes. Cinepointe 6.

KUNG FU PANDA 3 — ★★★1/2 (PG) DreamWorks brought its A-game for this sequel. Lots of laughs, a good script and top performances. 95 minutes. AMC Layton, Syracuse 6, Megaplex 13, Cinemark Farmington, Layton Tinseltown, Newgate Tinseltown, Megaplex 14, Walker 8, North Ogden 6.

THE MARTIAN —★★★★ (PG-13) A sort of “Cast Away” meets “Apollo 13” and certainly a nominee for Best Picture (among other categories),“The Martian” is sci-fi done right. Some strong language, injury images and brief nudity. 141 minutes. MovieGrille, Kaysville.

NORM OF THE NORTH — ★ (PG) Norm’s heart may be in the right place, but the execution is so sub-par, unfunny and unentertaining, he shoulda stayed up north. Mild rude humor and action. 86 minutes. North Ogden 6, Centerpointe 6, Syracuse.

THE PEANUTS MOVIE — ★★★1/2 (G) An adorable visual and aural treat for the whole family with a great soundtrack and a wonderful message. 93 minutes. Cinepointe 6, MovieGrille, Kaysville.

PRIDE, PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES — Rated PG-13 for zombie violence and action, and brief suggestive material. Not reviewed by the Standard-Examiner. 108 minutes. AMC Layton, Layton Tinseltown, Cinepointe 6.

RACE — ***1/2 (PG-13) A well-made, well-deserved, and belated honor for an American hero, Jesse Owens, that in many ways is sadly still timely. 134 minutes. Megaplex 13, Cinemark Farmington, Layton Tinseltown, Newgate Tinseltown, Megaplex 14.

THE REVENANT — ★★★ 1/2 (R) This film is a production based on Michael Punke’s 2003 book, which is an accounting of Hugh Glass’ own story. And what a story — and what a production! Both the director and Leonardo DiCaprio pull out all the stops on this one. Strong frontier combat and violence including gory images, a sexual assault, language and brief nudity. 156 minutes. Megaplex 13, Megaplex 14.

RIDE ALONG 2 — ★1/2 (PG-13) The plot is paint by numbers, which puts pressure on the comedy to deliver. But it doesn’t. Sequences of violence, sexual content, language and some drug material. 101 minutes. Layton Tinseltown.

RISEN — Rated PG-13 for Biblical violence including some disturbing images. 107 minutes. Not reviewed by the Standard-Examiner. AMC, Syracuse, Megaplex 13, Cinemark Farmington, Layton Tinseltown, Newgate Tinseltown, Megaplex 14, Walker 8, North Ogden 6.

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS — Rated PG-13 for sci-fi action violence. “‘The Force Awakens’ is a credit to the ‘Star Wars’ franchise, and a very promising suggestion of what’s to come next a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away,” according to the Washington Post. 135 minutes. Megaplex 13, Layton Tinseltown, Newgate Tinseltown, Megaplex 14.

THE WITCH — ***1/2 (PG-13) Just as “The Martian” was sci-fi done right, “The Witch” is horror done right. The writers and directors get how to do horror. Disturbing violent content and graphic nudity. 92 minutes. Megaplex 13, Cinemark Farmington, Layton Tinseltown, Newgate Tinseltown, Megaplex 14.

ZOOLANDER 2 — ★★ (PG-13) Fifteen years later we get a sequel that feels largely like a retread of its original, with plot points, characters, even lines from the original trotted out as though they were brand new. Funny in spots, but a drag as a whole. 113 minutes. AMC Layton, Syracuse 6, Megaplex 13, Cinemark Farmington, Layton Tinseltown, Newgate Tinseltown, Megaplex 14, Walker 8, North Ogden 6.
