OGDEN — A musical said to be a precursor to “The Birdcage” opens soon at The Ziegfeld Theater, but behind the scenes carries an interesting husband-and-wife twist.

In “La Cage aux Folles,” director Morgan Parry is directing her husband, Caleb Parry, in a lead role of Georges and assistant director Lindsay Kapetanov is directing her husband, Cameron Kapetanov, in the other lead role of Albin. The two men play a gay couple who run a drag nightclub in the 1970s.

“It’s been an interesting process because we both know what we can get out of them in terms of what they can do, and it has been really delightful to get the best of both of our husbands,” Parry said.

This isn’t the first time Morgan Parry has directed her husband, but this time seems to be a bit different. “Last time it was a lot more stressful for some reason,” she said. “I think we have grown a lot especially in our vulnerability and honesty with each other.”

“I know his potential better anybody and now I can pull that out for the world to see,” Morgan Parry said.

She sees the same things happening with the two men. Caleb Parry and Cameron Kapetanov have been doing improv together for five years and play off each other well. “If they flub a line, the other knows the perfect thing to say,” she said.

In the musical, the nightclub is run by Georges and headlined by his partner of 20 years, Albin (known onstage as Zaza). The two men are shocked when Georges’ son announces his marriage to the daughter of a bigoted politician.

“As the fathers attempt to portray a ‘normal’ family to their son’s prospective in-laws, hilarity ensues with touching and love-affirming results,” the theater said in a news release.

The musical has been a multiple-Tony-award winning show on Broadway. Music and lyrics are by Jerry Herman, who also wrote “Hello, Dolly!”

“I don’t think a lot of people realize that,” Morgan said of the connection between “Hello, Dolly!” and “La Cage aux Folles.” The show was also the precursor the successful “The Birdcage” starring Robin Williams.

Morgan Parry said the Zig’s version of the musical follows closely along with the Broadway show, but people will recognize parallels from the movie because the two are very similar.

The show is “the full package” with a great script, lovely characters, stunning dancing and costumes, musical director Bonnie Romney said. She said the cast is small, but the characters are big and full of life.

Morgan Parry loves the fact that story is timeless. “At the end of the day, it’s about love,” she said.
