A missionary serving in Portugal for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints died Monday.
According to Daniel Woodruff, church spokesman, 20-year-old Elder Joao Victor Rodrigues Gondim died after collapsing during a soccer game with other missionaries. The church said in a statement Tuesday morning that the cause of death is unknown at this point.
The church said that Gondim was from Sao Paulo, Brazil and had been serving since July 2017.
"Our hearts go out to his family as they mourn his passing," Woodruff said in a statement. "We pray they will feel peace and support during this difficult time."
Woodruff also stated that the church is working to provide counseling to those missionaries who witnessed the death.
