More than 100 athletes from four continents gathered on the shores of Pineview Reservoir for the World Wake Surfing Championship on Thursday and Friday.

The niche sport is similar to a combination between wakeboarding and traditional surfing. For 90 seconds, surfers ride and perform tricks in the wake of a high-end motorboat.

Ogden Valley has hosted regional wake surfing competitions for the past three years, but this is the first time in the sport’s 23-year history that the world championship has been hosted in Utah.

Following two days of qualifying competitions, the finals are held at Cemetery Point on Saturday, Sept. 8.
