Michelle Obama did not wear a veil or head covering as she stood by the President’s side in Saudi Arabia paying respects after King Abdullah’s death.
Western women aren’t usually required to wear veils or head coverings in Saudi Arabia, but that didn’t stop the hashtag #Michelle_Obama_Immodest from trending in Arabic on Twitter, Politico reported.
Saudis used a hashtag that translates to “#Michelle_Obama_Immodest” to chastise the first lady for being disrespectful to Saudi traditions.— slone (@slone) January 27, 2015
Men who can't handle the sight of a woman's hair should probably wear something that covers their eyes. #Michelle_Obama_NotVeiled— Ellen Thompson (@EllenFabulous) January 28, 2015
In response the hashtag #Michelle_Obama_NotVeiled was created.
Heads up to #Michelle_Obama_NotVeiled for standing up to medieval, misogynistic, women-fearing cultures.— Amary Fecanji (@AmaryFecanji) January 28, 2015
Say wearing the veil would be respecting culture but we all really know it's about putting women in their place #Michelle_Obama_NotVeiled— Emily Ford (@emilyjford) January 28, 2015
The First Lady did however bow to local custom and stood slightly behind her husband in the receiving line.

According to the Huffington Post, Mrs Obama was pictured grimacing several times during the four-hour visit, which saw some members of the all-male Saudi delegation shake her hand, while others simply nodded at her as they passed by.
