OGDEN — The Standard-Examiner has hired a new reporter to cover Weber and Davis counties.

Megan Olsen has been working at the Standard as a news clerk since May 2018, and was recently promoted to a full-time reporter position. Her coverage area will include the Weber, Ogden, and Davis school districts, as well as Weber State University.

She will also assist in covering environmental issues for the Standard.

“I’m looking forward to the variety of covering early childhood through college issues,” she said. “And continuing to work with teachers and young people. I love working in and with schools.”

Olsen is a native of Cottonwood Heights and graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in history in 2010.

She has an extensive background in education, having served schools in Utah and Kansas by coordinating support services for under-represented students. She previously worked in the Canyons School District and the Granite School District through the United Way of Salt Lake. Olsen also previously planned events for the Utah Education Association.

“Megan is especially equipped to cover complex and in-depth issues in our schools and community. She understands the education perspective and has successfully proven her ability to boil down those issues, that are crucial for Northern Utah to know, in a way that points towards solutions,” Standard-Examiner Editor Jordan Carroll said.

“I like watching kids learn,” she said. “I especially like seeing a young person move from entering junior high school to choosing their career and going to college.”

In her spare time, Olsen enjoys cooking, reading and attempting to keep plants alive.

Olsen said she welcomes story ideas and concerns about schools from the community. She can be reached at molsen@standard.net or 801-625-4227.
