BOUNTIFUL — Utah’s Jazz Bear paid a visit to students at Valley View Elementary School last week as they rehearsed an original musical about the basketball franchise’s owners.

“Our Home Court” is based on the true story of Larry H. and Gail Miller. It was written by Mary Jane Ferguson and her husband Andrew — two parents from Bountiful — and performed by students from kindergarten through sixth grade.

“They are very influential here in Utah,” Mary Jane Ferguson said of the Millers. “It was a lot of fun researching their lives.”

The couple met in seventh grade and stayed together throughout their formative years and into adulthood.

Gail learned an important lesson about honesty as a young girl,” Ferguson said. “Larry learned the importance of standing alone even in difficult circumstances.”

Valley View students perform

Students from all grades at Valley View Elementary School perform an original musical honoring Gail Miller, the widow of the late Utah Jazz franchise owner, Larry H. Miller.

Those lessons served the two well as they found success later in life, Ferguson said.

People like the Millers make Utah a great place to live, she continued.

“The mission of the Valley View Musical is to use the performing arts to educate, entertain and inspire the students at the Elementary school using the stories of real local heroes to teach lasting lessons to children,” according to the news release.

The play is being performed at 6 p.m. from Tuesday, Feb. 27, to Friday, March 2, and at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, March 3. Tickets can be purchased at the Valley View Musical website.

Past original productions have included the stories of Utah natives: Philo T. Farnsworth, Olympians Noelle Pikus Pace and Steve Holcomb, and Col. Gail Halverson, also known as “The Candy Bomber.”
