Utah GOPers meet at convention; several Weber County races part of focus

SANDY — The Utah Republican Party convention on Saturday will potentially narrow the list of GOP candidates across several races in Weber County as the June 28 primary approaches.
The event, to be held at the Mountain America Expo Center in Sandy, is set to start at 7 a.m. on Saturday. State delegates, picked by their GOP peers, will do the voting, selecting their preferred hopefuls in numerous races, from the U.S. Senate contest on down to numerous Utah House races.
Generally speaking, if a candidate garners more than 60% backing, he or she alone gets the party nomination. If two each garner between 40% and 60% support, they both move to the GOP primary. Some candidates have already secured a place on the primary ballot via collection of signatures on petitions, a separate process.
The Utah Democratic Party is also holding its state convention on Saturday at Cottonwood High School in Murray. But no races pertinent to Weber County contain multiple Democratic contenders, thus there won’t be as much potential drama.
Here’s a look at the races pertinent to Weber County voters that’ll get attention at the GOP convention in Sandy and the candidates:

U.S. Senate: Several GOPers are running for the seat now held by Sen. Mike Lee, going for his third term. The top GOP hopefuls — at least gauging by fundraising — are Lee, Becky Edwards and Ally Isom. All three have already secured a place on the June 28 primary ballot via collection of signatures, so the convention will serve to show who delegates — typically among the most gung-ho of Republicans — prefer.
1st District U.S. House: The five Republican candidates are Blake Moore, the incumbent, plus William Campbell, Tina Cannon, Andrew Badger and Julie Fullmer. Moore and Cannon have already secured primary ballot spots via petition.
District 5, Utah Senate: Incumbent Ann Millner faces a challenge from GOP hopefuls Doug Durbano and Kevin Hall. All three are seeking a ballot spot solely via the convention.
District 8, Utah House: GOPer Steve Waldrip now holds the seat, but he announced Wednesday he was dropping out. That narrows the Republican hopefuls to Jason Kyle and Kimberly Cozzens, both seeking a ballot spot solely via the convention.
District 11, Utah House: Incumbent Kelly Miles is facing a challenge from fellow GOPer Katy Hall. Both have already secured a spot on the primary ballot via petition, so the convention will serve to see where the preference of delegates lies.
