WEST HAVEN — Weber County Republicans gather Saturday to pick party leadership for a new two-year term.

Jake Sawyer, the incumbent chairperson of the Weber County Republican Party, is the only declared candidate for the top spot. Likewise, Jackson Wing, the incumbent party vice-chairperson, and Miranda Rizzi, the incumbent secretary, are the sole declared candidates for those spots.

Johnny Ferry is seeking the treasurer post, now held by Chuck Ulrich, who isn’t running again. Two are vying for the new Weber County spot on the Utah State Republican Party Central Committee — Paul Mackley and Bruce Haynes. That will be Weber County’s 10th seat on the central committee.

Regardless, Sawyer said party members may still make nominations from the floor at Saturday’s gathering for the varied posts ahead of voting. Weber County GOP delegates — there are 651 of them — will make the selection.

Also at Saturday’s meeting, to be held at Rocky Mountain Junior High at 4350 W. 4800 South in West Haven, party delegates will vote on a proposed resolution “opposing subversion of water rights.” More specifically, the resolution, meant as a message to Utah leaders, takes aim at House Bill 150, approved during the 2023 legislative session.

Jake Sawyer shakes the hand of a delegate after being elected chair of the Weber County Republican Party during the party's annual organizing convention at HighMark Charter School in South Weber on Saturday, May 8, 2021.

Among other things, according to the resolution language, H.B. 150 authorizes “the politically powerful and well-connected to use the governor to take water away from small farms and others who lack money and power to protect themselves and their rights.”

Credentialing for the convention starts at 9 a.m. Saturday while official action begins at 10:30 a.m. Members of the contingent collecting signatures to try to force the measure approving a new state flag to the ballot will be on hand.
