Optum Health is hosting summer parties in June, inviting the community out for health and wellness activities and information sessions.

LAYTON — By 2060, nearly 95 million Americans ages 65 and older are expected to populate the country. That’s a 23% increase from the year 2018, according to census.gov.

“Focusing on senior health and wellness will only continue to increase in importance,” said Joshua Mattern, spokesperson for Optum Health in Utah. “At the same time, as we age, our risk of contracting serious illnesses and disabilities, and having physical accidents, and suffering serious complications, and losing our independence from them progressively increases as well.”

At its three community centers in Layton, West Valley and Sandy, Optum is hosting summer parties in June, inviting the community out for health and wellness activities and information sessions.

Mattern said the community centers have fitness equipment, wellness classes taught by experts, and health information sessions from doctors — all open to the community at no cost.

“Optum loves to be partners in the communities we serve, so whether you’re part of Optum or not, you’re invited to attend the summer parties and even the weekly activities,” said Jim Tett, mobile clinic operations manager for Optum Utah.

Tett said the centers offer everything from Zumba, pilates and yoga to games, crafts and recipe classes.

“One thing that helps the health of people is social interaction with others,” Tett said. “Being lonely and depressed can become an issue for the aging population. The kids have moved out, maybe a spouse has died or maybe family isn’t close by. Getting involved with others can really benefit your health.”

Tett said one unique part of the centers is a lifestyle class offered once a week in which people can reminisce about their life, tell their story and share experiences with one another. The exercise classes are even tailored to an individual’s circumstances.

“If someone has a balance issue, we will tailor that exercise to help improve their balance, for instance,” he said. “Anyone ages 55 and older is invited to come and take advantage of the things offered at the centers at no cost. There are no memberships, fees or registrations.”

The Layton Center will hold its summer party on Thursday. Two sessions are offered at 9 a.m. and again at 1 p.m. The center is located at 2146 N. Main St., Suite 514. For more information and schedules, go to optumcare.com/utcenters.
