Traffic pours down 5600 South in Roy on Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2018.

OGDEN — A new traffic pattern is coming to southbound Interstate 15 from 5600 South in Roy to 650 North in Clearfield. Changes to the southbound lane split could come as early as Tuesday, according to the Utah Department of Transportation.

Delays in the area are expected while crews remove the lane split starting at 8 p.m. Monday to 5 a.m. Tuesday. UDOOT advises drivers to plan ahead.

Lt. Justin Cheney with Utah Highway Patrol in Ogden is hoping the change will help decrease the number of crashes. He said it is difficult to reach accidents in the construction corridor because of backed up traffic at the lane split.

There were a total of 221 crashes between milepost 336 and 339, both northbound and southbound on I-15, from May 1, 2019, when the construction began to date, according to UHP.

“Use caution and observe speeds with the new traffic pattern,” Cheney said.

The lane split was put in place to accommodate work on the Union Pacific Railroad bridge and widening in the median of I-15. Removing the lane split will result in three southbound lanes in addition to an Express Lane extension from Layton Parkway to Riverdale Road in the coming months upon the UPRR bridge completion.

“Drivers can expect to benefit from the new Express Lane in the coming months,” said Brett Slater, UDOT I-15 Express Lanes project manager.

UDOT is planning additional improvements including new bridges at Church Street and 200 South, wider bridges and deck replacements at five locations, new ramp meters and ramp improvements, and concrete panel replacement from Hill Field Road to I-84.

Completion dates are subject to change depending on weather. For up to date information, visit dot.utah.gov/I15express.
