OGDEN — We’re in the home stretch before the 22nd annual Ogden Marathon, set for Saturday.

But this year’s marathon weekend is much more than just a single race, according to GOAL Foundation Executive Director Eric Bauman.

“This is a course that is what’s called a ‘Boston Qualifier’ course,” he said. “A lot of the people looking to run the Boson Marathon (come here). You have to qualify on a certain course to be put in the lottery to do that, so we have people from all over coming here to qualify.”

The GOAL Foundation organizes the Ogden Marathon while this year’s sponsor is America First Credit Union.

In addition to the 26.2 mile full marathon, there will be a half-marathon, relay, 12K and 5K. There’s also a festival and a free “Kids K” where 500 kids will run a 1K course.

Bauman said 5,700 competitors from all 50 states are expected this year with around 15,000 visitors.

Organizers were given a bit of a scare ahead of this year’s marathon.

Traditionally, the full and half marathons have run through Ogden Canyon along state Route39. Last Thursday, as a result of heavy flows along the Ogden River, a portion of S.R. 39 was partially washed out just to the east of Ogden, temporarily shuttering the road.

However, a press release from the GOAL Foundation confirmed that a major fix has been made to the roadway and the course will remain unaltered.

“Weber County Emergency Management and Utah Department of Transportation have confirmed the repair work in Ogden Canyon is complete and both lanes are in the process of being opened for two-way traffic,” the release said. “The impacted area of Ogden Canyon has been fully mitigated and will not affect the Ogden Marathon Course. This means that there will be no changes to the original course in Ogden Canyon and the Ogden Marathon is set to proceed as scheduled this Saturday, May 20, 2023.”

Bauman added that, as of Monday afternoon, there are still some race slots open for competitors in the half-marathon and 5K.

“We’re really excited,” he said. “It’s looking like we’re going to have a beautiful day.”
