Elevated levels of mercury have been found in fish at Causey and two other Utah locations — Minersville Reservoir in Beaver County and Navajo Lake in Kane County — according to a news release from the Utah Department of Environmental Quality.
Mercury is a naturally occurring element that can be transformed into methylmercury, a toxic form found in some natural waters, the DEQ said.
The advisory has been issued for brown trout. The DEQ said that women who are pregnant and children under 6 shouldn’t eat any servings of brown trout, while women of childbearing age and children 6-16 can eat up to two 8-ounce servings a month. All others should only eat up to six 8-ounce portions a month.
Eating more than recommend amounts “over a long period of time could result in an intake of mercury that exceeds the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency health recommendations,” the DEQ said in the advisory.
Chronic exposure to low concentrations of methylmercury may have neurological effects in developing fetuses and children.
There is no health risk associated with mercury in the water when using it to swim, boat or waterski.
