LOGAN, Utah (AP) — The family of a teenage Logan girl who survived a gunshot wound to the head will be handing out gun locks at the Cache County Fair.

The Herald Journal reports that Deserae Turner's mother April says her daughter's injuries had a profound impact on her life, and she's hoping the effort will help prevent future tragedies.

April Turner says guns have touched her life in other ways: Her grandfather died in a fatal domestic violence shooting, and a cousin died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Cache County Sheriff's Office Deputy Brandon Muir is helping by bringing 2,300 gun locks.

Muir says the project is helping him cope with the case. Two teenage boys were convicted of plotting to shoot Deserae Turner and leaver her for dead in 2017.
