FARMINGTON — A Layton man was indicted Tuesday on multiple charges of sexually abusing children, some reporting to police they were molested “hundreds of times.”
Brett Leonard Orton, 43, was charged with 16 felonies in total, consisting of six counts of sodomy on a child, a first-degree felony; four counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, a first-degree felony; two counts of rape, a first-degree felony; two counts of forcible sodomy, a first-degree felony; and two counts of forcible sexual abuse, a second-degree felony.
Dates of the alleged sex abuse range from 2001 to 2015, according to charging documents.
A lengthy indictment detailed the alleged abuse, with six victims being listed in the document.
Police say they were told by a man that in 2003, when he was a minor, Orton allegedly forced him to perform sex acts on a second victim, who was 11-years-old at the time, while Orton allegedly filmed on his cell phone. The second victim later told police that Orton had sexually abused her “hundreds of times,” according to charging documents.
She told police the alleged abuse started when she was a child and continued into her adult years. She said that Orton allegedly “sexually abused her on several occasions, in his car, at the home in Layton, in a trailer, and in the shed,” charging documents say. Orton allegedly threatened to hurt her and her family if she told anyone about the abuse, and offered her money after molesting her.
A third victim, now an adult, told police Orton began sexually abusing her when she was 13 years old and continued through her teenage years and into her 20s.
One incident that she recalled to police allegedly occurred when she was 17 years old. She told police that Orton allegedly gave her alcohol until she became intoxicated, then took her into a hallway of a Layton home and raped her, according to charging documents. She told police that Orton “continues to contact her and ask her to engage in sexual acts in exchange for money.”
Another victim told police that Orton sexually abused her as a teen, and offered her $600 to allow him to perform sex acts on her. She told police that Orton has allegedly continued to try and solicit sex acts from her including “within the past year,” charging documents say.
Police say Orton “occupied a position of special trust” with the four victims, but charging documents did not say how Orton had access to the children.
A fifth victim told police that she was molested by Orton in a Layton home when she was 15 or 16 years old, saying she “froze in fear” during the assault. Orton allegedly told her afterward not to tell anyone about what had just happened.
The last victim listed on Orton’s indictment told police that Orton tried to solicit sex acts from her while she was alone with him. She told him no, and nothing happened, according to charging documents.
Court records show Orton has been convicted of crimes in the past. In 2004, he pleaded guilty to attempted aggravated assault, which was reduced to a class A misdemeanor. He pleaded guilty to criminal trespass, a class A misdemeanor, in 2010.
Orton was booked in jail Tuesday afternoon, hours after an arrest warrant was approved by a Davis County judge. Orton is being held in lieu of a $100,000 bond at the Davis County Jail. He has yet to have an initial appearance date assigned in Farmington’s 2nd District Court.
