BOX ELDER COUNTY — Multiple car crashes on Interstate 15 in southern Box Elder County caused a temporary closure of southbound lanes Tuesday.

The Utah Highway Patrol reported that six semitrailers and roughly 10 passenger vehicles were involved in crashes that closed southbound lanes for several hours beginning Tuesday morning. No serious injuries were reported in the crashes. The roadway was later reopened in the afternoon.

The Layton Police Department told drivers on Twitter to avoid northbound lanes of Highway 89 and Layton Parkway due to slick road conditions.

Heavy snowfall throughout the Wasatch Front contributed to a number of car crashes. Snowfall will continue through into Wednesday. A winter weather advisory was issued Tuesday morning and is expected to last until 6 p.m. Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City.

Drivers north of Bountiful should expect to see winter driving conditions into Wednesday morning, the NWS said.

Additional snow accumulations of 2-5 inches in the valleys are expected, with locally higher amounts on the benches.

A backcountry avalanche warning is in effect for the Wasatch Mountains until 6 a.m. Wednesday.
