WEBER COUNTY — A Wednesday afternoon car crash killed one man, closed a busy Weber County road and left skiers temporarily stranded, police say.
A 37-year-old man is dead after a cargo truck with two people inside lost control while traveling on Powder Mountain Road just before 5 p.m. Wednesday, according to Lt. Matt Jensen with the Weber County Sheriff’s Office.
The truck flipped on its side during the crash, and a passenger was ejected from the vehicle, Jensen said. The passenger was declared dead at the scene by first responders. The driver of the vehicle was treated at the scene and only suffered minor injuries, according to Jensen.
The name of the deceased man has not yet been released by police, pending notification of the family.
Jensen said the preliminary investigation indicates the crash may have been caused due to the truck’s brakes failing while it was in motion.
The cargo truck involved in the crash was resting in both lanes of travel on Powder Mountain Road as of Wednesday evening, causing the state road to be closed down in both directions. Jensen estimated that the road could be closed until 10 p.m. Wednesday night or later.
Jensen said those trying to leave the resort from the top of the mountain were told to turn around and head back up to the Powder Mountain lodges where they will be given shelter until the road was reopened.
