Police lights breaking news

CENTERVILLE — A 5-year-old girl is in critical condition after being run over by a car Friday morning.

At 8:37 a.m., emergency personnel responded to an auto-pedestrian crash at 2025 N. 566 West, just west of Reading Elementary in Centerville.

A Chevrolet Suburban was driving west on 2025 North when a 5-year-old girl who lives in the area ran out into the street and was hit by the vehicle, according to a news release from Centerville Police Chief Paul Child.

The driver told police she was traveling at 20 mph and that she didn't see the girl, but "heard a thud" upon hitting her, Child said in the release.

The girl and her older sister were walking to school when the crash occurred. The older sister witnessed the crash and ran home to tell her mother, Child said.

An off-duty deputy/paramedic who lives in the neighborhood provided medical attention until on-duty first responders arrived. The girl was taken via medical helicopter to Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City, where it was determined that she has a fractured femur and an apparent brain injury, police said.

The crash is under investigation.
