Letter: Vaccination an easy way to prevent illness

Nov 6, 2021

HOW MANY PEOPLE REMEMBER THE DISEASE POLIOMYELITIS? IT IS COMMONLY KNOWN AS POLIO.

The symptoms of the disease include: fever, motor paralysis atrophy of skeletal muscles with permanent disabilities. President Franklin D. Roosevelt suffered from the effects of Polio. He was always seen in his wheel chair.

In the mid-fifties a vaccine was developed for polio. The majority of today’s population may not know or remember the disease. It took years of testing to develop the vaccine. The vaccine was placed in a sugar cube. We went to the local elementary school to eat the sugar cube. I don’t have any statistics on the percentage of the population that took the vaccine.

In the current pandemic, multiple companies have diligently worked to develop a vaccine in a relative short period of time. These vaccines have gone through rigorous testing in development. Having participated in an eight yearlong vaccine development for MS. I have a personal appreciation for development process.

Fortunately, both my wife and I were able to get both covid-19 shots when they were first made available. We have also received the booster without any side effects.

There are still a large number of people that are not willing to take the vaccine for Covid-19. The media has done a good job showing the horrible conditions of people that die from Covid-19. I hope that more people will understand the simplicity to prevent getting this horrible illness.
