Letter: Incensed by writer’s figures and reasoning

Nov 10, 2021

I read the op-ed by Mr. Young and was particularly interested in his dollar figures that he claims. He states:

“a lack of infant-toddler care alone costs our economy $57 billion each year in lost productivity, revenue and earnings, with $512 million of that figure from Utah.” According to the latest census data we have for Utah there are approximately 600,000 children aged 6-18. There are approximately 209,000 children under the age of 6. Based on those figures the amount that the Federal Government is currently spending in “Child Tax Credits” equals about $2.5 Billion per year in Utah alone. And this is from a fund that not one of these people paid anything into. And now Mr. Young seems to think that we, the taxpayers, need to provide more childcare and expanded childcare to people — on top of the additional benefits they already receive.

When is enough going to be enough? This current administration is turning our country into a Welfare State. And at some point — the bills must be paid. Another issue — Social Security Retirement income is taxable — child tax credits are not.

This is an insult to every senior citizen drawing social security retirement. And our State contributes to the inequity by taxing social security.
