Letter: NRA’s distorted grading system gives wrong impression

Oct 11, 2022

I am saddened by how the National Rifle Association’s Political Victory Fund has graded me with an “F” and in a way that it appears that I have lied to a number of residents about my moderate support for gun rights. I have told residents who were interested in my positions about guns that I supported the Supreme Court’s decisions in Heller v. District of Columbia (2008) affirming the individual’s right to keep and bear arms and in New York State Rifle & Pistol Assn., Inc. v. Bruen (2022) affirming the individuals Second Amendment rights outside of the home. I have taken a public stance against the ban of assault weapons based on the lack of credible scientific evidence of its ability to significantly reduce gun violence. I also have questions about the Constitutionality of raising the age of owning a gun to 21. Nevertheless, I admit that Utah needs to have carefully crafted “red flag” laws to temporarily take guns away from likely perpetrators of gun violence, especially in domestic violence cases, while assuring due process rights of all concerned and to have better, more comprehensive state-administered background checks to keep guns out of the hands of convicted violent felons or addicted drug users. The NRA and its black-and-white grading system, in my mind, does a disservice to those voters who want to make informed choices, not distorted choices. Voters need facts not simple opinions.
