Letter: Poem illustrates GSL’s enduring power to inspire
My father had a sentimental attachment to the Great Salt Lake, and back in 1935 wrote this little poem:
Great Salt Lake
While standing on the briny shore
I seem to read the ages past
When thou didst cover valleys o’er
It seems such greatness could not last
On yonder hill I still can see
The markings left in thy retreat
And though became this salten sea
And stubbornly fought off defeat
The streams that were thy main supply
Long since were turned to other use
To hush your deserts thirsty cry
And give to man supplies profuse
But thou art stronger far than many
In spite of him still hold thy place
As part of a Divine plan
Long shalt thou show they shining face
May Utahns be inspired to save this lake for future generations!
