Letter: Put Wall Avenue underground to benefit projects

Mar 29, 2023

The City presentation on MAKE OGDEN on Wednesday at Union Station was very informative and I urge all Ogden residents to attend future presentations. The MAKE OGDEN plan is missing a part that is necessary for the success of downtown Ogden. That is to put Wall Avenue underground from 23rd to 27th Streets. This will integrate the proposed Union Station Development with the City of Ogden. Not only with Twenty-fifth Street but also with the Wonder Block Development. It will open accessibility to the Union Station and the Transportation Hub. Equally important is the opportunity to build a park adjacent to both the Union Station and Wonder Developments.

The MAKE OGDEN presentation admitted to shortage of parks in the downtown area. The proposals call for about one thousand new children living in the down town area with currently NO plans for an outside space for them to play. We also need a walking path for all residents without continuous dodging of traffic. The “After Views” of the proposed Developments even show Wall as a green stripe.

Now is the time to do this! It will improve Wall Avenue as a better North/South corridor for the City as well as well as connecting the needed Union Station Development with the City. The cost of this is well within the budgets of the two developments and will help to ensure their viability.

Do this before building housing and finding that no one wants to live on an island separated from a vibrant city by a busy, uncrossable highway. The technical difficulties, a high water table, will have to be solved before any high rise buildings can be built anyway. The state of Utah and UDOT will join UTA and Ogden City in this much needed project.
