OGDEN — An Ogden man faces a second-degree felony manslaughter charge in the shooting death of a teenager.

Zedekiah Pool, 18, has a court appearance scheduled Oct. 18 in 2nd District Court before Judge Noel Hyde. Pool was charged May 19 in the death of the teenager, about 15 years old, at Pool’s apartment. Ogden police declined to disclose the victim’s name. Department spokesperson Lt. William Farr said Thursday the agency does not disclose information about juveniles.

Charging documents said Pool and the teen were in Pool’s living room in the early afternoon of May 5 and Pool was manipulating the slide of a 9 mm pistol when the firearm discharged, the bullet hitting the victim in the neck. Pool was trying to stem the bleeding when officers arrived. The teenager was hospitalized and died May 8.

An investigation found that Pool was “somewhat familiar” with guns and gun safety and was “aware of firearm danger generally,” a charging document said, and he was aware the teenager was in the room as he was loading and unloading the gun.

“It appears the defendant did not knowingly point the firearm at (the teen) and did not knowingly pull the firearm’s trigger,” police said in the May 19 document.

Pool had consumed marijuana before the shooting, and officers said they found inside the apartment a substantial psilocybin mushroom growing operation. Prosecutors also charged Pool with possessing clandestine laboratory precursors and equipment, a second-degree felony, and possession or use of a firearm by a restricted person, a third-degree felony.

Pool pleaded not guilty to all charges on Aug. 9 and waived a preliminary hearing.

Pool remains held without bail at the Weber County Jail. Prosecutors asked for the no-bail hold on the grounds that Pool may be a danger to himself or others if released. They said Pool had expressed suicidal thoughts.
