OGDEN — The Weber County Attorney’s Office filed criminal charges Tuesday against an off-duty Salt Lake City police officer accused of driving drunk and pinning a man between two vehicles after a crash.

Thomas Caygle, 37, was charged with third-degree felony aggravated assault and class A misdemeanor negligently operating a vehicle resulting in injury stemming from the Friday incident in Ogden.

A police probable cause statement said Caygle “was driving his truck and caused a minor accident.” After the drivers moved their vehicles off the road, they “began to argue, at which point, witnesses say, Thomas got into his truck, put the truck in drive and drove into the rear of the vehicle, pinning the other driver’s legs” between the vehicles, the affidavit said.

The victim was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Caygle had alcohol on his breath, slurred speech and difficulty balancing and he failed roadside DUI tests, according to the arrest affidavit, which was filed by the Riverdale Police Department. The Ogden Police Department asked Riverdale officers to investigate the incident “due to a conflict of interest,” according to the arrest document.

Caygle, listed in court records as a Clearfield resident, remained held without bail Wednesday at the Weber County Jail.

The Salt Lake City Police Department said Caygle was put on leave pending an investigation. “In reviewing the information and materials I’ve received so far, I am concerned and disappointed by this incident, which does not align with our core values and expectations,” Salt Lake Police Chief Mike Brown said in a prepared statement. “Following the conclusion or our internal investigation, any violation of department policy will result in prompt and full accountability.”
