CENTERVILLE — A Centerville police officer has died from injuries he sustained in a motorcycle crash in September.

Officer Jason Read, 40, died Tuesday, Centerville Police Chief Paul Child said in a news release. He had been hospitalized since Sept. 23 when the crash occurred.

Read was off-duty when he was struck by a car while riding his motorcycle along Antelope Drive near 2200 West in Syracuse. The crash caused serious injuries, Child said, and he was taken via medical helicopter to McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden.

Read was making "headway in his recovery" when he "unexpectedly passed away while still in the hospital" early Tuesday morning, the release said.

Read joined the Centerville Police Department in 2005. He served as a K-9 officer for three years and spent much of career working in the problem-oriented policing unit. He had "an incredible memory for names, faces, license plate numbers and other important information that made him a very effective officer," the release said.

"Officer Read was a member of the Centerville Police Department Family and was dearly loved and respected by his peers. We are all deeply shocked and saddened at his passing," Child said in the release.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been made.
