JONES, GARVIN WAYNE

Jones

LAYTON – A detective testified Wednesday, April 6, during a Farmington man’s child sexual abuse jury trial that an 11-year-old girl’s Nintendo 3DS had hard-core adult pornography and anime pornography downloaded on it.

Davis County Sheriff’s Detective John Olson said in 2014 when he examined the Nintendo owned by the girl he also found a short video of the girl that had been uploaded onto it. It was taken by a cell phone showing her performing a sexual act.

26-year-old Garvin Wayne Jones Jr. is accused of raping and sexually abusing the girl from 2012 to 2014, while she was between the ages of 9 and 11. He’s also accused of taking sexual photos of the girl, asking her to take inappropriate photos of herself and downloading child pornography on his computer and cell phone.

Olson was a member of the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force with the state Attorney General’s Office until November of 2015. Farmington Police Department, which headed the investigation, asked Olson for help.

Olson also testified he found other inappropriate photos of the girl on the Nintendo, he said.

The anime pornography images were of adults and minors engaged in sexual acts together, Olson said.

Farmington Police Detective Eric Johnsen testified that he had interviewed the girl at the Davis Children’s Justice Center after officers were called to the Jones’ home in July of 2014. Jones’ mother was accused of physically assaulting the girl, who was at the home, and another child. Both were taken into custody of the Division of Child and Family Services.

During the initial interview in July of 2014, the girl did not disclose any sexual abuse, but several months later she disclosed to another adult about the sexual abuse after the pornography was found on her Nintendo, Johnsen said.

Following the disclosure, Johnsen testified he interviewed the girl again and he also interviewed Jones’ father.

Johnsen testified Jones’ father told him during an interview, “"Every time I caught Garvin and (the girl) in a compromising position, I talked to Garvin.”

Graphic photographs of child pornography found on Jones’ cell phone and computer were also presented to the jury.

Jones is charged with the following:

  • Three counts of rape of a child, first-degree felonies
  • Three counts of sodomy upon a child, first-degree felonies
  • Three counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, first-degree felonies
  • Six counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, second-degree felonies
  • Three counts of dealing in harmful material to a minor by an adult, third-degree felonies

Jones has been held at the Davis County Jail since his arrest on Jan. 27, 2015, in lieu of a $250,000 bail.

The trial is being held in 2nd District Court in Layton before Judge David Hamilton and continues Thursday, April 7.
