BOX ELDER COUNTY — One man was critically injured after a diesel engine repair business went up in flames Wednesday night.

At 5:14 p.m. Wednesday, Box Elder County firefighters were called to a reported explosion at S&M Diesel Service at 3585 W. 5000 North in unincorporated Box Elder County.

A worker was using a plasma cutter on a frame with fuel cells when a cell ignited and exploded, Box Elder County fire marshal Corey Barton said.

One man was critically injured and was taken to Bear River Valley Hospital before he was flown via medical helicopter to a hospital in Salt Lake City, Barton said.

It took firefighters from six departments about 45 minutes to get the fire under control.

The fire caused an estimated $750,000 in damages to the building and equipment. The building is a total loss, although firefighters were able to save some business records.
