Bountiful I-15 single semi crash

A 60-year-old truck driver from West Valley City died in a single vehicle crash Monday, Dec. 17, 2018, on Interstate 15 near Bountiful.

BOUNTIFUL — A West Valley City man died after his semi drifted off of the interstate and plowed into a heavy steel post in West Bountiful Monday evening.

Eugene Eldridge, 60, was driving a semi truck north on Interstate 15 around 8 p.m. Monday when he experienced a medical problem, the Utah Highway Patrol said in a media release.

The semi traveled off the freeway to the right near 500 South, crossed through an area of the on-ramp and into a dirt area between the freeway fence and a movie theater parking lot, UHP said. The semi did not stop until colliding with the steel post and concrete barrier that supports the 400 North exit sign.

Eldridge was given CPR by officers and other medical personnel on scene. He was taken to Lakeview Hospital in Bountiful where he was pronounced dead.

No one else was involved in the crash or injured, UHP said.
