OGDEN — Deputies are investigating after a woman booked into the Weber County Jail was found dead last month.
Marion Herrera, 41, was booked into the Weber County Jail on May 18 on suspicion of forgery and theft, Weber County Sheriff’s Lt. Lane Findlay said. She was suffering from heroin withdrawals and was checked into the medical unit.
On May 22, staff checked Herrera’s cell and found her unconscious and not breathing, Findlay said. She was pronounced dead.
The investigation is being handled as an in-custody death. An internal investigation is being conducted to determine if proper protocol was followed, he said. They are awaiting the results of an autopsy and toxicology analysis to determine a cause of death.
Findlay said medical staff checks on the inmates in the medical unit of the jail every two hours. Corrections officers also make routine checks, he said.
“Unfortunately, we have a handful of deaths in the jail every year,” Findlay said, citing the causes ranging from suicide to medical complications.
