After a dismal 2016 season for Utah State football — going 3-9 and breaking a five-year bowl streak — the Aggies will try to inject new life into their offense with the addition of a veteran coach.
Utah State has hired David Yost as its new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, head coach Matt Wells announced Friday in a news release from the school.
“His pedigree and background as a quarterback coach and ability to develop explosive offenses will be very exciting for our fans and players alike,” Wells said in the release.
Yost spent the 2016 season as quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator at Oregon, helping guide one of the top-performing offenses in the country.
“I’m very grateful for this opportunity and for the confidence that coach Wells has shown in me,” Yost said in the release. “Being an offensive coordinator is a big responsibility and I’m looking forward to helping Utah State football.”
Yost coached quarterbacks for 12 years at Missouri, developing several top collegiate signal-callers including Brad Smith, Chase Daniel and Blaine Gabbert. Smith was the first Division I player to pass for 2,000 yards and run for 1,000 yards in a season, a feat he accomplished twice.
Yost then added duties as Missouri’s offensive coordinator, which he coached for four years from 2009-12.
He was also quarterbacks coach at Toledo from 1996-2000 and inside receivers coach at Washington State from 2013-15.
Jovon Bouknight and Luke Wells, co-offensive coordinators in 2016, will remain on staff, according to the release. Bouknight will continue to coach receivers, while Luke Wells will shift to coaching tight ends. Mike Canales will give up duties as tight ends coach but remain assistant head coach and oversee USU’s running backs.
