BYU midfielder and Davis High alum Mikayla Colohan (8) handles the ball against Santa Clara in a national semifinal College Cup match Friday, Dec. 3, 2021, in Santa Clara, Calif.

BYU women’s soccer was in its first final four in program history Friday night, playing on Santa Clara’s home turf against a program in its 12th College Cup appearance, and trying to avenge a 1-0 loss from WCC play earlier this season.

And while Davis High alum Mikayla Colohan is the four-time All-American and first-round NWSL draft pick, it was her teammate and Davis alum Olivia Wade who had the decisive kick.

After 110 scoreless minutes, Wade converted BYU’s fifth penalty kick and the Cougars defeated Santa Clara 3-2 in a shootout to advance to the national championship match.

BYU (18-4-1) will face Florida State (21-1-2), last year’s national runner-up, at 6 p.m. MST Monday at Santa Clara. That will air on ESPNU.

“What a game,” BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood said in a release from BYU. “I am really proud of our players and our staff and everyone who was involved. Obviously, a very exciting and huge win for us. It was a fantastic game. We knew this would be a tough battle, and it was a really electric game for college soccer. We didn’t get the goal we wanted in regulation, but it came through in PKs.”

Colohan took BYU’s first PK attempt and fired it off the crossbar. It shot straight down but did not cross the line. After Santa Clara’s Sally Menti scored her team’s first take and BYU missed its second, it looked like the Cougars were in trouble.

Brecken Mozingo converted BYU’s third PK and Cassidy Smith dove for a save on a shot from Santa Clara star Kelsey Turnbow to make it 1-1.

After both teams scored on their fourth tries, Wade punched in the final kick in the bottom left. SCU’s Ellie Glenn put the final kick of the shootout off the right post.

“We reminded ourselves to just stay locked in and not get down,” Colohan said. “It’s hard when a team plays as good defense as Santa Clara, but we got the result we wanted and that is all that matters.”

Florida State (21-1-2) defeated Rutgers 1-0 in the other semifinal match with a goal in the 71st minute. BYU and Florida State have never met in women’s soccer.

WEBER VOLLEYBALL WINS

Weber State volleyball (21-9) was back in action Friday night at Swenson Gym in the first round of the NIVC tournament, and the Wildcats advanced with a 3-1 win over Cal State Bakersfield.

WSU will get a third match against Portland State, hosting that second-round rematch at 2 p.m. Saturday in Swenson Gym, after PSU outlasted Pacific in five sets to start the afternoon in Ogden.

WSU (21-9) and PSU (20-10) split their season series during Big Sky play, with Weber winning 3-1 in Ogden and PSU claiming a 3-1 win in Portland.

Weber State hosts a doubleheader against Portland State on Saturday: the 2 p.m. NIVC volleyball match, and a 6 p.m. men’s basketball game.

WSU was in control with wins of 25-18 and 25-22 before Bakersfield won the third set 25-22 and jumped to a clear advantage in the fourth. But Ashlyn Power had other ideas. Down 13-7, she served two aces to help Weber cut it to 13-12. Later, down 18-16, Rylin Adams swung a kill to start a 6-0 run that delivered the Wildcats the win. Adams served an ace at 22-18, then Power hit a wicked drop for an ace on match point at 25-21.

Dani Nay had 12 kills, Adams 11 and Emma Mangum 10. Power had four aces.

BYU, UTAH ADVANCE

In the women’s volleyball NCAA Tournament action, No. 11 seed BYU and Utah both won first-round matches Friday in Provo and advance to face each other in a rematch at 7 p.m. Saturday. The winner advances to face No. 6 seed Purdue.

Pod host BYU (29-1) started off red hot in the nightcap. After Boise State (24-11) played to a 3-3 score early in the first set, BYU trounced the Broncos from there to take the first set 25-6 on the way to a sweep, taking the latter sets 25-19 and 25-10. Erin Livingston had 15 kills.

Utah defeated Utah Valley 3-1 (25-16, 22-25, 25-19, 25-11) in the first match of the day at Smith Fieldhouse. Utah (22-8) star Dani Drews totaled 18 kills and 12 digs. Tori Dories had 13 kills for UVU (16-13).

BYU swept Utah 25-23, 25-23, 25-16 in the two teams’ regular-season matchup on Sept. 16, which was also in Provo.
