Southern Utah University head football coach Ed Lamb is leaving to become assistant head coach at Brigham Young University, the schools announced Saturday.
Lamb served as the head coach at Southern Utah for eight seasons, leading the Thunderbirds to the school’s first Big Sky championship in 2015.
“(Lamb) is an experienced head coach with expertise coaching both sides of the ball as well as special teams,” BYU head coach Kalani Sitake said in a written statement. “I value my great relationship with Ed and I’m looking forward to working closely with him at BYU.”
The move takes Lamb back to his alma mater, where he played defensive end for two seasons and, as a senior starter, helped lead BYU to a 14-1 record and No. 5 national ranking in 1996.
BYU said Lamb’s specific position group duties will be determined later. But Southern Utah’s announcement said he will coach tight ends and special teams for the Cougars.
“I’m excited to get back to BYU,” Lamb said in a press release. “My time on campus as a Cougar changed my life, and continues to shape who I am today. I’m looking forward to working with Coach Sitake, who has been a teammate, friend and colleague for over 20 years.
“I’ve enjoyed my time at Southern Utah immensely,” Lamb continued. “I have been so fortunate to be the head football coach at Southern Utah University. The past eight years have enriched my life in countless ways. My family and I will sorely miss being a part of the Cedar City community.”
In Lamb’s absence, Southern Utah named defensive coordinator Demario Warren as interim head coach.
Lamb moves to BYU with 19 years of college coaching experience. He coached BYU’s linebackers as a graduate assistant in 2001, when BYU finished 12-2.
He has also served as defensive coordinator for the University of Idaho and at the University of Redlands, where he received a master’s degree in education counseling in 1998.
Prior to his tenure as SUU head coach, Lamb was an assistant coach for three seasons at the University of San Diego. In 2005 and 2006 at San Diego, Lamb was defensive backs coach and recruiting coordinator under head coach Jim Harbaugh, helping the Toreros to consecutive NCAA Division I-AA Mid-Major National Championships.
At BYU, Lamb joins Sitake’s staff with previously announced hires of Ty Detmer as offensive coordinator and Ilaisa Tuiaki as defensive coordinator.
