BRIGHAM CITY — Not having speedster Haley Stafford for Thursday’s Region 5 showdown at undefeated Box Elder could have left Woods Cross fans feeling uneasy.

Stafford wasn’t the slightest bit nervous.

“I just feel like (this team is) always working hard no matter what the team we play is, no matter what they hear about the team,” Stafford said after her Wood Cross teammates proved her confidence wasn’t misplaced with a 2-1 extra-time victory.

Stafford, a senior who also runs track and won the 100 meter at state her sophomore year, had her wisdom teeth removed this week.

“The pain was just too bad, so it was like, ‘I’ll just get them out,’” Stafford said.

Woods Cross coach David Newman acknowledged not having Stafford forced a change in formation.

“We changed the formation just because it’s difficult to play the same way without the pace and we don’t have somebody else that gives us quite that pace up front,” Newman said.
