Fremont High's Maggie Mendelson serves the ball in a match against Syracuse on Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2021, at Syracuse High School.

Fremont High senior Maggie Mendelson and Syracuse senior Hailee Garcia were named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s High School All-America Third Team on Wednesday.

Mendelson, a three-year starter for Fremont, totaled 407 kills in 85 sets played for the Silverwolves this year, missing about four weeks of the season due to service on U.S. national basketball and volleyball teams. Mendelson had a .294 hitting percentage with 59 service aces and 55 total blocks.

Mendelson started her high school career as a class of 2023 graduate but recently announced she completed the reclassifying process to graduate in 2022.

She’s been highly recruited by college volleyball and basketball programs across the country and says her plan is to play both for the same school in college.

Garcia, a four-year starting setter at Syracuse, finished as the state’s all-time leader in career assists this season with 3,311. Garcia signed with St. Mary’s College for volleyball.

GARDINER, CHANDLER ON HOOPS LISTS

Fremont High senior Timea Gardiner and Farmington High senior Collin Chandler were each one of 50 girls and boys high school basketball players across the country to be named to their respective 2022 preseason Naismith Trophy watch lists this week.

The Naismith High School Player of the Year award is given each year to the most outstanding girls and boys prep basketball players for “tremendous on-court success,” according to the Naismith Trophy website.

Gardiner, the No. 6 recruit in the class of 2022, signed with Oregon State women’s basketball on Wednesday night.

Chandler, the No. 28 boys basketball player in the class of 2022, announced Wednesday afternoon he’ll attend BYU.
