By Patrick Carr - | Nov 15, 2021

Several more area prep athletes have signed national letters of intent since the signing period opened last week.

SOCCER

Bonneville High goalkeeper Ellie Scholer signed with UNLV. Scholer kept 11 shutouts and made 36 saves for the Lakers this season. Bonneville won the Region 5 championship and advanced to the 5A state semifinals.

SOFTBALL

Farmington’s Delaney Baker signed with BYU. Baker, a pitcher and designated hitter, pitched 134 innings with a 2.17 earned-runs-against average and 189 strikeouts against 50 walks.

At the plate, Baker hit .487 with 39 RBIs, five home runs and three doubles. Baker was the only Utahn listed in this year’s BYU softball signing class.

“Delaney is very competitive and has the drive to be dominate on the mound. She has tremendous work ethic and wants to be in the big time situations. Delaney has a great drop ball and can keep good hitting teams off the scoreboard. Delaney will make our pitching staff stronger on day one,” BYU coach Gordon Eakin said in a release about the Cougars’ signing class.

Clearfield’s Miranda Mansfield signed with Salt Lake Community College. Mansfield, an infielder, batted .522 with three home runs, four doubles, 15 stolen bases and 17 RBIs last season as the Falcons won Region 1.

Layton’s Tasia Shibuya signed with Snow College. Shibuya batted .326 with 19 RBIs and four doubles for the Lancers last spring to go with a .962 fielding percentage and eight stolen bases.

GOLF

The University of Utah men’s golf team announced four signings on Monday, three of which have Northern Utah ties.

The Utes signed Morgan High senior Tanner Telford, who won medalist honors at the 2021 3A state tournament by eight shots and the 2019 3A state tournament by 15 shots. Telford has helped Morgan High win four straight 3A team state championships from 2018-21.

Utah also announced it signed Hunter Howe, a junior transfer from Weber State and a Weber High alumnus.

Howe averaged 73.65 shots per round as a sophomore in 2019-20, sat out the 2020-21 season with injury and played with WSU this fall, where he won all three of his matches in the WSU-Utah State Cup and helped the Wildcats win that event 12.5-3.5.

Brandon Robison, a Viewmont High alumnus, will join the Utah team this summer upon returning from a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
