Prep roundup: Fremont wins up-and-down match against Farmington after coaching change

PLAIN CITY — Fremont High volleyball beat Farmington in an up-and-down match Tuesday by four sets: 25-21, 25-10, 24-26, 25-8.

Ayva Cebollero led the Silverwolves (17-11, 9-3 Region 1) with 33 assists to go with 11 kills and three service aces. Maggie Mendelson led Fremont with 22 kills and Ally Cook had 20 digs.

“It was just awesome to come out and give everything with these girls, win a game and at the end of the day if we won or lost, I wouldn’t care because we were here playing for each other,” Mendelson said.

Farmington (7-13, 5-7) trailed 23-22 in the third set, but held off Fremont to take the match to a fourth set where the Silverwolves opened on a 14-0 run.

Tuesday was the first match Fremont had played since a recent coaching change. Assistant coach Jantzen Smith is serving as the team’s head coach after Alise Bowles resigned that position on Friday.

“This week has been kind of hard especially with the change of coaches, just yesterday we had a big talk about how we’re going to forget everything and focus on what’s coming up,” Mendelson said.

The 6A and 5A state tournament brackets are scheduled to be released Thursday.

CLEARFIELD 3, LAYTON 0

CLEARFIELD — Clearfield beat Layton 25-12, 25-13, 25-21 to finish third in Region 1, the Falcons’ best finish in a region since 2014 when they were third in Region 6.

Savannah Anderton led Clearfield (14-7, 8-4 Region 1) with 15 kills and five aces with two blocks. Delaney Rasband put up 30 assists and Sadie Christiansen had 10 digs.

Mercedes Lopez led Layton (6-21, 0-12) with 10 assists while both Anastasia Witte and Anna Merrill hit four kills.

BOUNTIFUL 3, BOX ELDER 0

BOUNTIFUL — Bountiful won the Region 5 championship outright by scores of 25-16, 25-13, 25-13. The win clinched consecutive region titles four Bountiful, which was now won six region championships the past eight seasons (2014-17, 2020-21).

The Redhawks (23-3, 9-1 Region 5) hit 18 service aces as a team, with Evalyn Chism and Mia Ray each hitting five and Jordyn Harvey serving four. Ray led the team with 11 kills, Emrie Satuala had nine and Taylor Harvey hit seven.

Box Elder (15-13, 2-8) stats weren’t reported.
